I never wanted to be a therapist, or at least, I wasn’t aware that I did.
As it turns out, though, the universe had different plans for me and I’m so grateful everyday that I finally listened to what I was being called to do and this is where I landed.
Being a therapist is something I am in love with doing and I am truly passionate about helping people find their best potential. I am immensely overwhelmed with joy when you give me permission to be in the front row seat to your healing journey.
I grew up in the restaurant business and I spent a majority of my life telling everyone that restaurant life was not the life for me. I did everything I could to run away from that work but now when I reflect on my time in the restaurant, I realize that my upbringing in a restaurant helped me establish a solid foundation in my career now. I actually learned a lot of skills I still use with my clients in therapy on a daily basis.
I have an incredibly strong work ethic and will show up for the job regularly, ready to dive in and get to the bottom of the problem. I’ve learned the importance of patience, kindness and absorbing every detail. I also found my love for caring deeply for people and the many stories they bring to the table (both literal and figurative).
Reflecting on these things, it now makes sense to me that I became a therapist (but my feet definitely hurt less this way). I spent several years supervising other therapists and working in agencies. I have spent time going into homes and working in group settings in agencies and community mental health centers. I am passionate about learning new techniques and skills and regularly seek out learning opportunities.
Over the years I have narrowed my therapeutic focus. I currently specialize in trauma, attachment, anxiety, depression and dissociation as well as strengthening the mind/body connection. I work with all genders from ages 4-99 and up. I use a wide range of modalities and include components of somatic therapy, attachment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, strengths based therapy and others. I am trained in and working towards certification in EMDR. I offer individual 1 hour and 90 minute sessions for psychotherapy. These sessions can include a combination of modalities as mentioned above and can also include EMDR.
EMDR Intensive Sessions
I also provide EMDR intensive sessions.
EMDR intensives are scheduled in 4 or 6 hour increments with a goal of increasing efficiency in memory reprocessing. An intensive session allows you to focus on decreasing internal distress around traumatic events, and other adverse life experiences while concurrently teaching you skills to manage overall dysregulation.
Each EMDR intensive will include an intake session where we will gather important information about your history including previous therapy experiences, past diagnoses, current symptoms and level of distress. We will discuss the EMDR process so you know what to expect during the longer intensive session. I will also assess your readiness for an intensive session and we will discuss any concerns or questions that come up.
EMDR intensive sessions won’t include trauma processing for the duration of the session.
We will also practice strategies to help you regulate your nervous system through the process. All of these strategies will be ones you can take with you for everyday use.
EMDR intensives can save you time in long term processing. Hour long sessions can be effective too, but often in the space between weekly or bi-weekly sessions, more dysregulation can occur or other stressors get in the way which can delay further processing. In addition, much of the time is spent during these sessions on introductions/checking in since the previous session and then regulating and grounding or wrapping up at the end of session. With an intensive session, there is less time spent on introductions or wrap ups so continuous processing can clear all of the trauma(s) for you. This leads to less overall distress around the incident and less of a need to come back for multiple sessions.
How will you know EMDR intensives are right for you?
- Scheduling weekly sessions seems overwhelming or daunting due to life/work/family/other stressors.
- You have been struggling to move through a specific incident for some time and previous modes of therapy or other treatments just aren’t working.
- You feel like you need help right now, but you don’t want treatment to last months or longer.
- You have a short amount of time in which to fit therapy in such as a leave from work or a break from school.
- You have been working with a therapist, but your trauma is getting in the way of other great work. EMDR can work as an adjunct service to your current therapy and you can continue the work with your therapist during and after.
